The short of it is that my wife and I sustained serious injuries at the Hands of a distracted driver. My we were hit head on when this woman crossed into oncoming traffic and hit us. Link to the story; Link Needless to say we are blessed to be alive! But my 2012 red marble haze 1600 is gone for good, very sad!

Distracted drivers!...is it cell phones?...Texting?...A young 19 yr old lad crossed the road in front of one of my work mates just last week, he was in a car but my workmate was in a logging truck!..The truck was not loaded but still weighs around 16500kgs!..Here we drive on the left so the car hit the truck in front on the right side...both vehicles would be travelling at 80kms(50 mph) and the young fella was killed instantly!...what a waste!...Very sad for alot of people not the least his mum and dad!..Thankfully our workmate was uninjured. You need to get back on a bike brutha...got to beat the devil!...i know it wont be your beloved Trumpet...but you need to free the soul...just sayin.. All the best...Tal.

I see people all the time making turns and going through intersections while looking down and you know it is a cell phone. In some cases I see people holding the stupid phone out in front of them and above the steering wheel so they can see it better and you know their eyes are not straight ahead.

As Tal said get back on as soon as you can if you intend to ride on..
Yesterday was a shit day on the roads for me, no less than four cars cut me off on the highway , had to pull over and ask my mate if I had a target painted somewhere on me.

It's a shame to give up something you love because of some dickhead..... everybody keep it safe and upright.

Hope you, your wife and riding friends recover soon. Everyone take care out there....too many lousy, distracted, angry or just plain incompetent drivers on the roads. On the way back home from a T/Bird ride with a few Sydney area members yesterday with the missus on the back I came out of a dual lane roundabout and gave her a bit of a burst as the lanes merge a few hundred metres up the road. Went past a P plater only to notice in the rear view mirror that he planted it to get in front of me before the merge. I thought; nah, not worth it.....and let him slide past just at the merge. He did get the one finger wave though. Guess what? 500m up the road he turned off. Complete Dickhead. Actually that's not quite true, not complete....he is still actively working on being a Dickhead.

I hope all of you recover swiftly and also dont have too much mental trauma. If you can get back on the bike but first get yourself well.

This cell phone stuff is bull shit, there has to be away to mitigate this smartphone misuse, I see it all the time when I drive my 4wheel drive I'm high enough to look down and watch mostly these little fucking college age punks typing away on their phones keeping them down between their legs so the cops can't see the phone. (Raleigh NC has numerous large Universities in a 20 mile radius so we have more than or share of college idiots.) The insurance companies and motor vehicle agencies could also help put a stop to it by getting tough on convicted violators. Make the assholes ride a bus to work and school for about 2 years on the first conviction since they won't be able to get insurance or a license. Maybe they'll remember the next time. I've pulled up next to these idiots on my bike and told them to put the phone down, of course they just flip me off. Like Matt said I worry about these assholes all the time when the wife is on the back, get well soon Harry and company.

And yes, it is crazy out there, especially with the texting and cell phone use goin on these days"WHILE DRIVING", which I suspect is probably what happened in your case.I too, have had many close calls over my 53 year run on two wheels, several of those,TOO close for comfort, and the latest ones [I've had several and probably shouldn't even be here today ] were since owning my Tbird.[must be something about the color RED] But,by the grace of God,they missed me,but not by much,so I'm still here so I can aggravate you guys.:Wink
For 29 years,I was part of the recon team here in Massachusetts, where we saw things that weren't very pleasant. It didn't really bother me too much til I saw someone I knew,IN PIECES!!!!!!!!!!! But the bottom line is,we ALL have a number, and when that number comes up,well, that's it. And it doesn't matter what you're driving or what you're doing. That's just the way it is.So again, I wish you and the wife a speedy recovery!! Good luck my friend!!! Dave!!!

Hopefully, for everyone's sake, it was a medical event and not pure distracted driving. It's a menace, and every time I ride, I've got that in the back of my brain.
Heal well, and let the investigation run it's course.

What a nightmare, but while it's not much comfort, it could have been much worse. Screw the bike, it's replaceable. This is why every time there is a car looking to turn or cross in front of me i slow down to the point i can stop if they do the unthinkable. So much so that i often have to check for people in back of me for fear of getting rear ended. It's over compensating maybe but this stuff just scares the living hell out of me. It's scary how fast things happen when someone pulls a bonehead move like that. Glad you'll be ok but so sorry for all of you. It's little consolation, but your experience will do some good by instilling a refreshed awareness into those who read your story. It has for me. I will no doubt think about it as i ride for some time. These stories always affect me like that.

I had a recent accident accident too. I hit a bear that crossed the road in front of me. So freaky!! Distracted driver or a bear, sometimes you just never know what comes your way. You can be as careful as you like, but stuff happens.
I hope that once your aches and psyche heals that you return to riding. I won't be able to ride for a while, but I already miss it, and look forward to be back in the saddle.
Good luck!!!

Hey day, No. I did run a true HID bulb and 2 mondo driving lights mounted low on the forward crash bars. The Harley which was riding staggered to me also was equipped with Harley's aftermarket LED headlight. Non of that would have mattered as her head was down and didn't realize she crossed the yellow line until she hit me.

I agree her head may have been too far down to see in her peripheral vision, but sometimes the modulating light will catch their attention because they think it could be an emergency vehicle with Wig-Wags on. I've had it happen to me twice once when I had my Goldwing and once with the Bird, iv'e always had modulators on my bikes since they became available moons ago. I watched cars start to pull out and slam on the brakes when the light caught their eye. I know a lot of people have negative things to say about Modulators but I drove patrol cars for a lot of years and Wig-Wags work, far better than Red and Blue lights. Get Well Harry.
