Shift Arm Goes Down
The other night I get on 95 heading south and trying to juice it to move to the middle. Well noooo... I start redlining in 4rth gear and can't catch 5th after a couple of flicks with my left boot. My riding buddy behind me scoots up and passes me and opens his right arm wide as if to say "what's up?" So I pull over onto the shoulder in the pitch black night to see what happened. Turns out my shifter arm had collapsed and was dragging on the floor. The jamb nut had loosened so I was stuck in 4rth. I am now on the 95 shoulder with no light other than the headlights from trucks screaming by . All the time I am wondering how I can avoid becoming roadkill so I put on the parking lights. Better to drain the battery than become a pancake.
Earlier in the evening I had installed a pair of Kuryakyn foot pegs that have a higher profile so I adjusted the shifter arm to fit my boot. Obviously I didn't tighten the nut enough and I didn't use Locktight. What a dumbass. So I was on my ass trying to fit the shifter arm into the hole in the black of night. Like threading a needle in the dark without my reading glasses.
Anyways I find the hole and tighten the nut by hand - again - since I left my tools in the Saddleman bag I normally have but didn't have that night. So once I got going it turns out that my buddy had stopped about a mile ahead to wait. Luckily he had a #10 wrench and tightened me up.
The moral here is never leave home unprepared. Ya'll ride safe...

Many thanks MJ. I don't leave home now without tools and Locktite.
