I'd hooked up with a pair of riders from Ohio and New Jersey back at the Ludlow gas station, and we were parched. Your lips dry out to where keeping 'em sealed is a priority, because wind will inflate your face if you don't.
Pulling into Needles, passed a flip-flop melted into asphalt where some brave soul had dared crossing molten blacktop. We all gassed up, then went looking for concrete - kickstand sank into pavement, had to replace a divot. Rolling from shade at the pumps back into sunlight forced a squirt of gas straight up thru pinhole vent in the Triumph's gas cap. We parked at a deserted market, tongues dragging, and sought relief inside. Ohio and I split up to get water and ice. NJ had already vanished.
Scraped some frost into my bandana (and down my neck), grabbed 5 pounds of cubes, met Ohio holding three gallon jugs of water. And there, down the frozen food isle, there was NJ..... NJ was last seen bent over a cooler, huffing all the N2O propellant from whipped cream cans, can-by-can, very methodically, harvesting all in sight.
Moral of the story? Plan desert crossings at night, carry lots of water (cooling is a plus), keep your lips sealed, and by all means be careful whatcha pick up along the way.
