| Posted : 09 Sep 2014 - 21:32 Post title : Re: Road King Bags (Re: drhach) | | I took the stock bags off and sold them to a forum member since they were my 3rd warrantied set and starting to warp again. I was able to get the Road King bags for $200.00 from a friend.
I used a piece of aluminum from a US Navy LCAC, but any piece should work. I mounted that to the factory mounting holes and extended it both directions so it could spread the stress of the bag weight over a larger area. Then I drilled a hole for the front hole in the RK bag and bolted that in. I then drilled two new holes through the bag and plate and before bolting them in I used a smaller piece of aluminum to bridge the two rear holes to keep the plastic of the bag from tearing.
The bags hold about 1 1/2 times the gear of the stock bags and are holding up fine after a year of use.

My wife's uncle has them on his Road King Custom and I've always wanted to add them to my Storm but those suckers are expensive. I think they look great though and I've seen several other Birds that have them and I think they fit the bike very well. Nicely done. Looks great.

My only other question is do they cause any issues for passenger seating with how high/forward they sit? I don't think they would, but I'm having a hard time imagining if they would be in the way of the passenger's legs.
EDIT: I'm guessing no, considering you've got the sissy bar on in the second pic.

If you look at the top photo, the one with the dreaded ape hangers, you will notice the radius of the bag lines up with the radius of the seat. That gave the best fitment to the bike for aesthetics. I then adjusted the passenger floorboards to fit my wife. Since she is all of 5' 4", I needed to elevate them anyway. She does not complain about her legs resting on the bag and is able to open the side I keep water bottles on as we ride. (I keep the right side bag unlatched)

My dad actually wanted me to fit some slightly shorter apes to his (probably 8") if they would work with stock cables. You guys have the same exact bike in the same color, except his has stock bags and bars. I seriously about shit when I found your old 10" apes thread because I had wondered about Road King bags for my Storm, and he wanted apes for his SE. Showed it to him and he had the same reaction. And we both thought we were so damned original

I like the box, but I'm not a fan of the unfinished look from removing the stock backrest.

I like what was done. Love the Roadking bags and far superior to what Triumphs are in size and quality. Tour pak is for when over nighting which might be twice a year. I also have another bag that mounts on the tour pak which ends up with more storage than the luggage I bought. Just easier now doing a swap since it's all quick release.
Do you know what he did to dropped the pipes? Can't tell in the pic what was used or done. The bags are lower than mine which is really what I wanted and still may do .
By the way has he had any sag on the Road King bag straps? I took them off because I saw so many Road Kings with the buckle straps sagging.
Again nice job, well done john

Bags get to be a personal preference in the end for a variety of reasons. About the only thing I can add is that you think the shock cut out option through before you buy. If you are going to get easy brackets for quick removal they won't look right and don't need cut out. Shock cut out bags have to fit only one way and could interfere with rear guards and even the seat. If you look your seat hangs over a bit and then you have to bush out the bags to make them fit. Too wide a gap and it just won't look right. Best thing is if you can see them somewhere and measure up to see how they may need to mount.

| Posted : 29 Sep 2014 - 22:22 Post title : Re: Road King Bags (Re: Jango) | | the only thing i might add to that becasue i am still trying to figure it out is if you are using the QR sissy bar as well as a quick release bag system. If so, then you end up uisng the two most forward bolts on the fender to mount the bags, this moves the bags (or can) a bit into the shock if they will not clear them, otherwsie then the cut outs could come in handy, but as also said there will be a larger gap there for sure, i thinnk they stick out a good 1/2 inch or so with the QR sissy systme being used as well. Hard thing to decide, looked at so many.

My pipe are the British Customs Hogslayers. As for the bag straps, I have yet to have an issue with them sagging. If I do, I will just punch another hole in them to tighten it up.
